Lesson 3 · Calls

Hear the call. See the shape.

Calls make a fast table readable. Learn what each word means before worrying about when the clever play is to stay quiet.

Players draw and discard while watching for tiles that complete a useful combination. A call claims the opportunity and tells the table what kind of group or action is being made.

If another player’s Sagasa tile legally completes your hand, you may intercept it and win for double the normal result.

Calling well

A legal call is not always the best call.

Exposing a group can move you closer to a complete hand, but it also tells the table what you are building. Before calling, ask whether the tile improves your hand enough to reveal part of your plan.

Does it complete a useful set?

A claim should make the hand clearer, not simply busier.

What does it reveal?

Other players will read your exposed tiles and adjust.

What do you discard next?

Know the follow-up before committing to the call.
